As GPSC and UPSC are unique answer of this question too required to be unique with outbox aspects, so its going to cover to all aspects of preparation rather than just simple information about books.
4. Charm of Preparation
Why to prepare for UPSC/GPSC for sack of money???? or prestigious job ??? Starting Preparation for GPSC is not less than any adventitious journey. Preparation should be seen as object of grooming our self rather any simple comparative exam.
- One may come across facts/information of his own cultures past, Our Geography and same of the worlds? Isn’t it exciting to know about jungles of Amezone?
- Seasonal effects in Australia due to whether change? to Geography of our own land India/Gujarat? From where our holly river Ganga/Narmda begins?
- We can get opportunity to learn about French Revolution to Maha Gujarat Movement.
- We may get chance to understand our economy from where does revenue generate and where state spend it ? What is impact of general financial policy on our day to day life? Why petrol price hike ? why gold price are still stable? logic behind scheme and their actual implementation.
- From Vedic Regim to Industrial Revolution. We may witness how rational our ancestor was ! How they plan our country and united us in India and one can also learn different policies of colonial time which leave no effort break our country and unity.
- During learning we can enjoy to learn about stages of malaria in human body to the stages of passing budget in parliament.
- Different aspects/ point of views of circumstances which take place around us. We may differentiate between myth and reality.
- We may be able to express our views/ides/feeling perfectly/effectively not only in official/academic communication but also in love letters. we may be able to put our thoughts before others with rational and logical ground.
- From Human Body to Governance Body, From Rivers to Mountain, From Jungles to Modern Cities, Modern Architecture to Historical Monuments, Tribes to Civilized Culture, Basic subtraction to complicated mathematical quarry all is within ambit of GPSC/UPSC exam preparation.
Therefore, preparation for GPSC/UPSC is not about mugging up but its about personal grooming. Its about cultivation of Curiosity to satisfaction of curiosity. So if one prepare for UPSC/GPSC as art of learning and for enjoyment, there are heavy chances to get succeed.
5. From where to start ?
Preparing for UPSC/GPSC is not about just job/academic success but as its decision of life as important with getting marry someone. So we need to prepare our mentality. To being we should prepare our mind/body and soul.
- Lets begin with control on our self, One should have self control, Self Control on emotion, Self Control on sleep to eating, Self Control over using of Mobile/internet/social media. Self Control over our anger. Lets being with anger, we should try to reduce our anger on our parents as basic preparation. Then should try to reduce use of mobile, especially should avoid to touch phone for at least one hours after we wake up in morning. Leave mobile before one hour of sleeping. Reading Shreemad Bhagwat Geeta can be best way to develop control (One may read at least 02 sloks to 01 Adhyay daily). We may concentration with idol or picture of God on whom we have faith (Idolworship)
- Second is Self Motivation, there will always be time where we would fill as “LOOSER” or Ï Can’t “ we may feel exhausted with our family/social circumstances. Than What to do ? Our Goals can be self motivational tools. We should set up goal in life. Only materialist goal like 5 figure salary, 4 wheeler car, 3 BHK apartment, 2 children and one wife would not serve its purpose of self motivation. then which kind of Goal can be perfect for self motivation? Same can be learn from the dignities who live their goal like Shivaji or Maharan Pratap who live, who fought, who kill, who save, who rule, who become king for only goal “Swaraj”. Either like Jagatguru Adi Shankra Charya who roam entire india who establish MATH in four direction who did every thing with one Goal : development of humanity and devotion and character in our life. Our ancestors , our soldiers like Havildar Abdul Hamid to Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who fought who kill, who died for only goal for security of mother land. We can also have our choice of Goal. “अप्प दीपो भव” “Be your own inspiration” . No online motivators but our pure goal will motivate us in every situation and and at every stage of life. How can we choose goal? Our Faith in God and love towards our human brother/sister can lead us to develop aim/goal of our life. We will learn the same gradually, developing selfless goal is not easy task. But once we have our own enlighten selfless goal we can achieve not only UPSC/GPSC but whatever we wish. We will god help of God as Shivaji got help of Maa Bhavani.
- Concentration: If we can achieve above two points then concentration is not going to be very hard task. But we should always start in ascending order (from easy to hard)
- Continuity : However we are powerful but if we will not pursue whatever we are doing with continuity then we can never be even peon, being class 1 is matter of quite impossible.
6. Bitter fact :
GPSC exam for Class 1/2 usually supposed not be conducted every year, it may come once in two years or so on with total vacancy minimum 400 to 800. UPSC conducts exam for Class 1/2 every year with average vacancy of 800 to 1100. So we may conclude that in next five year there supposed to near about 4000–5000 and 2000–2500 candidates are going to be selected in UPSC and GPSC respectively but just how much candidates are going to apply for this 6000–7000 posts in next five years? Figure may be in millions.
So moral of the story, you should be enough serious to prepare for the exam (read point no 4 and 5 of this answer again carefully), otherwise we with our hand will ruin our own career. If we are preparing for any competitive exam but not with serious approach, than we are wasting time/money/life better to get any private job/business which we can get/start with our academic/social/financial condition.
7: If you have come on this point after reading all points properly. You deserve proper way of preparation subject wise, Point No 01 of this point will be discussed in detail again. There is nothing hard in preparation
lets start from prelim,as prelim is MCQ based exam, there will be question on factual position and answer too will be based on the facts. We have to rely upon authenticate sources. We will discuss material subject wise.
a) Social Science from Class 05 to 10 (Gujarat Board) will cover history, art and culture and political science but we have to read Geography, History and Economy from Class 11 and 12 as well.
c) Current affair of economic field which include various current welfare schemes / economic planning may be prepared from Budget of Gujarat/Indian, Economic Survey of particular year, Gujarat Magazine (Published by Government of Gujarat)/ Yojana Magazine (Published by Government of India)
c) Science and Technology from 5 to 10 level and current affair of medical science and new inventions and various organization/awards in the field may be prepared from the news of DD News/Rajya Sabha TV/All India Radio News.
d) We should not take mathematics lightly. We should start with writing tables (Gadhiya) from 01 to 30, Square from 1 to 60 and cube (Ghan) from 1 to 30 daily. Thereafter, practicing short cut method from Vedik Ganit (From Book by Sheth Prakashan) This book is quite short but very important and try to solve sums starting from 05 to 09. One should also try to solve sums from previous question paper.
e) Gujarati : From 05 to 12.
f) English : 11 to 12 grimmer
Point No a to c are basic and once you think that you have completed Gujarat Board books very well, you can start with NCERT Books from 06 to 12 for related subject.
8) Once you have completed Gujarat Board and NCERT Books (CBSE Board Books) you will be capable to decide good books by your own for mains preparation. As per my opinion one should prepare for prelim and mains exam simultaneously, but reading NCERT/Gujarat Board should be completed first. Now let me discuss books to be referred for mains of view
For History/Geography/Public Administration/Art and Culture/Economic Planning/Political Science/Ethics books by University Granth Nirman Board are most useful. Though i am not giving you the list of books as preference of books depend on various factors though One may get full details of books title by following link ( I do not insist in any way to buy particular book only)
9) Answer writing for mains : As per Ira Singhal topper of UPSC 2014 or 2015, ÜPSC Is art of writing” same is true for GPSC as well. GPSC not only check facts presented in answer but also way of expression. One should develop way of expression. It’s all about articulating to the answer, rather than simply producing material facts. GPSC always ask open ended question where one required to express his/her personal thought along with fact on particular point. For example. Give details about E-NAM project (GPSC 2016–17 ) I have written some answer for getting point very well, same may be referred from following link google drive link
10) what is basic requirement of writing good answer ? It comes from plenty of reading.
- For better example of Essay you may refer to popular column published on every Wednesday and Sundays in leading Gujarati News paper, You may refer Gunwant Shah (Divya Bhaskar), Gunwant Chho. Shah (Gujarat Samachar - Network Column), Editorial of Divya Bhaskar and Sandesh.
- We should read articles published in Gujarat Magazine and also news update on Press Information Bureau which may enable us to improve our language and will let us to describe our thought on effective way.
- Practice makes man perfect so try to write as much as you can on BLANK (un-ruled) page.
11) once we complete half of the course, we would be able analyse previous year question paper, which will help us to set up our reading and writing style.
11) final about interview: interview is too all about checking our common sense and check our sensibility not for checking informative knowledge ( as it has already been judged during course of prelim and mains) and common question that we are going to ask is about our background, hobbies and our personal though about some social issues and Interview supposed not be over without one question, why you want to be public servant/class one officer? if you say for serving people than you supposed to be ask counter question dont you think there are other ways also to serve people/country? Then why are you choosing this career? So our natural thinking would only in interview rather than being “practical or hypothetical answers”
12) So its all about good starting, so let us start, all are welcome to message me personally on quora for any individual quarry
